An invincible determination can accomplish almost anything and in this lies the great distinction between great men and little men- Thomas Fuller
It is almost one year ago since Rory McIlroy famously capitulated at the Augusta Masters. Without doubt since then he has shown huge determination in firstly winning his maiden major and now becoming world number one. Indeed he has presented upon us the great distinction between himself and that of his many playing colleagues.
Many others have blown similar leads to McIlroy in Major tournaments. However the spectacular nature of McIlroy's demise last year allied with his huge and growing reputation posed many questions. The most integral one being, how would he recover from such a setback.
Yet since then he has answered those queries with the admirable courage, nerve and audacious skill. He showed incredible mental strength to come back only months later to claim the first of what will surely be many majors at The Congressional in Maryland. This at a time when others would still be nursing the psychological scars from such a sporting disaster.
It is also fitting that he has become number one at a time so close to the Masters. It will soon be the 1st year anniversary of perhaps his greatest ordeal on the golf course. A traumatising experience that could have set his development back years. Twelve months later and many now wonder could he top off his most recent achievement with a crowning glory at Augusta to round off a truly adventurous year.
However the Masters will now also be eagerly anticipated for another reason. Tiger Woods is slowly but surely roaring back into the form that made him such a worldwide icon. His late surge last week to challenge McIlroy added to the spectacle of the Northern Irish man achieving his number one ranking. Furthermore his victory at the Chevron World Challenge suggests he may be coming back into his form of old.
There is no doubt that any golf fan would be salivating at the idea of Woods and McIlroy going toe to toe at Augusta on the last day of the Masters. Would McIlroy cement his status as the worlds greatest? Or would the caged animal that is Tiger Woods unleash himself back into the wild and show everyone that he is still king of the golfing jungle.
We can only but hope that these heavyweight golfers will be able to slug it out in a few weeks time for what would be spectacular sporting theatre.
